Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease that can give rise to a serious illness like the flu. Nowadays, various people are suffering from dengue. Mainly, it occurs in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Let us study about dengue fever, its symptoms, prevention and treatment through this article.

If dengue is not severe enough, it causes high fever, rash, muscle and joint pain but if it is severe it can cause severe bleeding, sudden drop in blood pressure and death. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is called severe dengue fever. According to the Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP), there have been more than 67,000 cases of dengue fever in India as of 13 October 2019. There are about 12,756 cases reported in the state of Karnataka. In the states and union territories of India, dengue is endemic. It has been observed that due to floods and monsoon season, there is a high probability of dengue outbreak due to rain in some states. Stagnant water conditions also allow mosquitoes or vectors to breed.

What are the symptoms of dengue fever?

When dengue fever is not severe enough, the symptoms are rarely seen in children or adolescents. If symptoms do occur, they last for four to seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

  • head ache
  • Joint or muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • glandular swelling
  • Eye pain
  • Rash etc.

Most people recover within a week or so. But in some cases, the symptoms worsen and become life-threatening and are serious causes of dengue. In this case, the blood vessels become damaged or leak. Platelets fall from the bloodstream. In severe cases of dengue, there are some symptoms that occur during fever such as:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Blood in urine, feces or vomiting
  • Tiredness
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Gums or nose bleeding etc.

How does dengue fever occur?

Dengue fever is caused by four types of dengue virus spread by mosquitoes. All viruses spread through mosquito species known as Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Let us tell you that dengue virus contains four different serotypes (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4). They belong to the genus flavivirus, the family flaviviridae. The Aedes aegypti mosquito originated in Africa, but is also found in tropical regions around the world. When a mosquito is infected with the dengue virus and bites a person, the virus enters the mosquito. When this infected mosquito bites another person, the virus enters the person's bloodstream.

How can dengue be prevented?

According to the World Health Organization, the vaccine itself is not an effective tool to reduce dengue fever in areas where the disease is common. It is necessary to control the mosquito population and human exposure which is the most important part of preventive efforts. To prevent dengue, it is important to avoid mosquito bites. Wear clothes that cover the skin and prevent mosquito bites. Like wearing socks, long sleeved shirt etc.

  • Use mosquito repellent repellent.

  • Use mosquito donor.

  • Netting or screen should be in windows and doors.

  • Fragrant soaps and perfumes can attract mosquitoes.

  • It is necessary to remove the stagnant water on time. Aedes mosquito thrives in clean and stagnant water.

What is the treatment for dengue fever?

As we know that dengue is a virus, so there is no specific treatment. But an interruption can help. How severe this disease is depends.

If dengue fever is not severe enough, some treatments may help:

  • A person suffering from dengue fever suffers from high fever and vomiting which may cause dehydration. One should drink clean water. Rehydration salts can also be taken.

  • Pain relievers like Tylenol or Paracetamol can help reduce fever.

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin etc. are not recommended as they may present a risk of internal bleeding.

If dengue fever is severe:

  • Intravenous fluid (IV) supplementation can help.

  • Patients suffering from severe dehydration, blood transfusion may be the solution.

  • If the symptoms become worse then hospitalization is required.

So, now you have come to know about dengue fever and its causes, prevention and treatment.
