Who was Rani Kamalapati?
Kamlapati was the daughter of Raja Kirpal Singh Sarautia of the Salkanpur princely state of Sehore. She was known for her intelligence and courage. She was a skilled horseman, wrestler and archer.
As a skilled general, she fought wars with her father's army and her women's team and defended her kingdom from invaders.
Rani Kamalapati was the widow of Nizam Shah, whose Gond dynasty ruled the then Ginnaurgarh, about 55 km from Bhopal in the 18th century.
Queen Kamalapati is known to have shown great bravery in facing the attackers during her reign after the murder of her husband. Kamalapati was the "last Hindu queen of Bhopal", who did a great job in the field of water management and established parks and temples.
After the death of Queen Kamalapati in 1723, the rule of the Nawabs began in Bhopal, led by Dost Mohammad Khan.
In his blog about Veer Rani, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan wrote, “Gond queen Kamalapati is still relevant 300 years later, and we are grateful to honor her for her sacrifice. Every part of Bhopal tells its own story. The echoes of his sacrifice can be heard in the waters of the lakes here," the CM wrote, referring to his "Jal Samadhi".

About Kamalapati Palace
Kamalapati Palace is situated on the bridge between the big and small lakes of Bhopal. Built in 1722, it is named after Rani Kamalapati, the widow of Nizam Shah. Nizam Shah was the head of the Gond ruler, Ginorgarh. The palace has been designated as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
On the hill on the western side of this palace are the remains of the Fatehgarh Fort which was built by Sardar Dost Mohammad (1708-1726 AD) of Bhopal, who laid the foundation of modern Bhopal.
